OUR CURRENT CAMPAIGN

STRONG AGAINST CANCER

Cancer takes a toll on communities across Uganda. It’s a complex disease that affects people in each city, town, and neighborhood differently. Prevention is the best way to fight cancer. This means getting people to do things that will protect their health— like get screened, quit smoking, and exercise more. It also means bringing together local leaders to support local cancer prevention efforts. Communities like ours can help lead the way.

As a foundation RED WOMEN FOUNDATION UGANDA has developed this

Campaign to help community groups like schools, institutions and villages in Uganda guide towards better health. This can help;

♦ Educate people on how cancer affects your community.

♦ Give people tips on how to lower their cancer risk.

♦ Work with other groups and community leaders to make sure people have the information and services they need.

♦ Come together with other stake holders as a community in the fight against cancer.

♦ Use community tours and materials to spread the word.

The project is due to take 5 year of implementation in all parts of the country

In which the above stated activities and tours will be conducted.

As a foundation we developed a community outreach strategy—a plan of action to get information about cancer prevention to the people in our counties, state, tribal communities, or territories. And we can tailor the campaign to meet the needs of our

Community and to address our group’s mission and resources. You don’t need to be a public health expert to make this strategy work.

In this campaign, we give definitions, tips, and samples. For groups with more resources or more experience in community outreach, health promotion, and partnerships, against cancer.

What’s STRONG AGAINST CANCER AWARENESS?

It’s a movement against all kinds of cancer effects in Uganda, cancer being a new chronic raising at a high rate by effect there needed a campaign against its effect by making an outreach program to pass on cancer awareness messages to our community which involves:

Chapter 1. Understanding our Community Needs on cancer

Getting a clear picture of how cancer affects our community and what information people need to live healthier.

♦ Find statistics on the cancers that affect our communities most.

♦ listing all the cancer screening services available in our communities.

♦ learning what people in our communities do—and don’t do—to keep from getting cancer.

♦ Find out how much people in our community know about cancer.

Identify possible partners who can come on board to and reach out to our communities

Developing an advocacy plan

As a campaign we will focus on advocacy as a tool of approach in reaching out to the communities;

Advocacy is the effort to influence people to create change through various forms of persuasive communication. In the context of cancer control and prevention, effective advocacy is required to create an environment conducive to improving the way cancer control knowledge is put into practice. Effective cancer advocacy can help to increase cancer awareness, reduce barriers to control, develop a comprehensive cancer control plan and allocate necessary resources for priority interventions to reduce the cancer burden. Advocacy for comprehensive cancer control is usually aimed at decision makers, but it also needs to target influential leaders and groups, and the public in general, in order to eventually mobilize whole societies in a sustained fight against cancer. Without a proper advocacy plan it will be difficult to implement the desired changes in cancer control.

Anyone directly or indirectly involved in cancer control can advocate for it, so long as there is the will to devote time, knowledge and skills to reach the desired outcomes. Within community, cancer institute, , associations of medical professionals working in cancer control, cancer patients groups, as well as bodies dealing with health promotion, environmental health, and prevention of chronic diseases, all can play an important role in advocating for cancer control through our campaign because we are making it an anticancer umbrella.

The importance of an advocacy plan cannot be understated. With collaborative action and a precise strategy we can increase awareness of the growing crisis of cancer in Uganda and encourage action towards its control and prevention. The following steps should be used to develop an advocacy strategy:

Chapter 2. Planning our Community Outreach Strategy

We developed an outreach plan to let people know about cancer rates in our community, the need for screening and prevention, and what they can do to protect their health. Put together a plan that can helps us in;

♦ defining our goals as a community against cancer.

♦ identifying our audiences of outreach towards our cancer movement

♦ developing our messages to the community.

♦ Choose the best ways to get your messages out.

♦ Give people a clear call to action.
